Meet Nate Hefner
I’m Nate Hefner, a Licensed Professional Counselor based in Charlottesville, Virginia.
I work in-person with individuals and couples who are feeling stuck in patterns—whether that shows up as anxiety, depression, relationship conflict, or the lasting impact of trauma.
Many of the people I work with have already spent time trying to understand what’s happening in their lives, but find that insight alone hasn’t fully created the change they’re looking for.

In-Person Therapy Services in Charlottesville, Virginia
I offer couples and individual therapy focused on emotional patterns, trauma, and meaningful change.
Individual therapy focuses on understanding your internal experience—your emotions, patterns, and how your past may be shaping your present.
This work is especially helpful if you are navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, or feeling stuck in patterns that don’t seem to change through insight alone.
Together, we work in-person to develop greater awareness, emotional regulation, and more stable ways of relating to yourself and others.
I work within modalities such as AEDP, IFS, somatic and attachment based approaches as well as targeted modalities such as EMDR.
I work with couples who are experiencing conflict, disconnection, or patterns that feel difficult to change on their own.
Couples therapy focuses on understanding the emotional dynamics between partners—how patterns form, how communication breaks down, and how to begin shifting toward a more secure and connected relationship.
My work is informed by Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Transformative Couples Therapy (TCT), helping partners move beyond surface-level communication into deeper emotional understanding and repair.

Nate is certified in assisting clients with Ketamine for conditions such as treatment resistant depression and PTSD.
Nate will also meet you for preparation and integration of any psychedelic journeys you are planning for your healing.
This work is grounded in careful preparation, supported sessions, and thoughtful integration to help patterns that have not responded to traditional approaches.
HOw I approach Therapy
Therapy is not just about insight—it’s about creating change that is actually felt and lived.
I see therapy as a process of understanding and shifting the patterns that shape how you relate to yourself and others.
These patterns are not just cognitive—they are emotional, relational, and often held in the body. This is especially true when trauma is involved.
My work is grounded in an attachment-based, relational, and somatic approach. I pay attention not only to what you think, but to how your nervous system responds, how emotions move, and how experiences are carried physically over time to bring you back to a whole sense of self.
Why In-Person Work Matters
I place a strong emphasis on in-person therapy because something essential happens when two people share the same physical space. It's uniquely human.
Our nervous systems are able to interact directly—through presence, timing, and subtle cues that can’t be fully replicated online. This creates a depth of work, relational felt sense, that is often difficult to access otherwise.
Modalities I Use
My work integrates approaches such as EMDR, parts work (including Internal Family Systems), and AEDP, depending on what is most helpful for your experience.
For couples, my work is informed by Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Transformative Couples Therapy (TCT), helping partners move beyond surface-level communication into deeper emotional understanding and repair towards a more secure attachment.
Who I Work Best With
I tend to work best with individuals and couples who are interested in going beyond surface-level solutions and are open to exploring deeper emotional and relational patterns.
This includes people who:
-
Feel stuck despite insight or previous therapy
-
Are navigating anxiety, depression, or trauma
-
Want to improve how they relate themselves and others in close relationships
-
Are open to a more experiential, body-aware, whole-self approach
